My name is Marah, and I’m 18 years old. I come from Leverkusen, a city in western Germany. After finishing high school in the summer of 2025, I knew I wanted to go abroad. I’ve always loved traveling—getting to know new cultures, perspectives and people, exchanging ideas even without speaking the same language, is super exciting. Experience how people in other parts of the world live. And believe it or not, “hand-and-foot language” has somehow always worked :)
That’s why I decided to do a volunteer service with kulturweit.When I got the confirmation, it was clear: my journey would take me to Hungary!
I have choosen my volunteering year with a focus on nature, because I’ve always been fascinated by natural sciences. Whether it was building a bee and insect hotel, taking part in clean-up events, or designing a sustainable cookbook – I was there ;)
It’s important to me that our world remains a place worth living in for future generations. Sustainable tourism plays a major role in that -traveling without harming nature. That’s why I think, it’s so interesting how the Bükk National Park Directorate and the Szeleta Park Visitor Centre in Miskolc put this into practice: combining nature experiences with environmental protection and education. By now, Laura and I have been in Miskolc for a month and have already had the chance to experience many exciting things - for example, taking part in a bird catching camp, accompanying a student in her research work in one of the many caves in the Bükk, and attending several important events.
I hope that through this blog we can share many insights into our life as volunteers in the Bükk National Park, give you a behind-the-scenes look at nature conservation work, and we’re really excited about everything we’ll get to experience and learn here!
